The Gums pastoral station was taken up by the Burchett Bros. in 1839.
In 1876, pioneer Scots born pastoralist William Ross engaged architect Joseph Reed to design a new two storey stucco faced Italinate style mansion on a site half a mile distant from the original homestead. The axially arranged mansion is dominated by an imposing pedimented and arcuated entrance portico and wide encircling iron verandahs.
